How to Wash a Duvet in Hamilton (Without Wrecking Your Home Washer)

Your home washer can't safely wash a NZ king duvet. Here's how to do it properly in Hamilton — and when to use a 30kg commercial machine.

Hamilton winters are damp, and duvets pick up moisture, dust and odour over the season. The problem? A standard 7kg home washer in NZ simply can't fit a queen or king duvet — and overloading it kills the bearings.

Why home washers struggle with duvets

  • Duvets need room to move — cramming one in stops it cleaning properly
  • Wet duvets weigh 8–15kg and unbalance the drum on spin
  • Home dryers can't fully dry a duvet in one cycle, leading to mildew

Use a commercial 30kg machine

Hamilton's 30kg front-load commercial washers (like ours at Fifth Ave) can handle two king duvets at once with room to spare. Pair it with a high-capacity dryer and you'll have everything washed, rinsed and bone-dry in about 90 minutes — done in one visit.

Tips for washing duvets

  • Check the care label for max wash temperature (most synthetics: 40°C, down: 30°C)
  • Use a gentle, low-suds detergent — extra rinse if you have sensitive skin
  • Add wool dryer balls to keep the filling fluffy
  • Fully dry before storing — even slightly damp duvets grow mould fast in Waikato humidity

Or just drop it off
